SPANISH SCHOOL IN PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO

SCHOOL DESCRIPTION

Our language school in Playa del Carmen is located only a few minutes from the beach in a lively area. The school building is a typical Mexican house, built in the Hacienda style. The language school offers ten modern, air-conditioned classrooms, spread over two floors and overlooking a magnificent exotic garden. A beautiful setting such as this definitely provides an excellent learning environment. There are numerous shops, bars, restaurants and Internet cafés within walking distance of the school. The school also provides wireless internet free of charge for your laptop.

SPANISH PROGRAM

Spanish Program Language courses begin every Monday for all language levels, even for absolute beginners. The lessons are 60 minutes in length. In addition to small group and private instruction, you can also choose combination courses (combination of both group and individual classes). There is a maximum of 5 students per group. Depending on the course, programs are 20 through 30 hrs per week.

Special courses are generally available as one-to- one training only and prepare students for the special requirements of professional life. Field-specific vocabulary, precise formulation and fluency in speech are the main goals of these courses. In Playa del Carmen, students can take the following special courses:

  • Medical Spanish
  • Business Spanish
  • Spanish for Tourism

Other special courses include Spanish and Diving (variety of diving packages available), Spanish and Salsa (3 dancing lessons per week in addition to your Spanish course) and Spanish and Mexican Cuisine (3 lessons per week preparing Mexican dishes, in addition to your Spanish course). LEVELS

Spanish courses are offered for all levels (beginners, elementary, low intermediate, intermediate, advanced, and superior). The courses and teaching standards meet the requirements of the joint European Curriculum, which is important for recognition at many universities.

The proficiency levels are divided into further sub-levels to ensure optimal uniformity within each class. If a student is ever dissatisfied with the class into which he has been assigned, he can of course change groups after consulting with the teacher and school directors.

EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS

The educational materials are up-to-date and mostly come from Spanish universities or from Instituto Cervantes. They are specially developed to enable fast and effective learning of Spanish as a foreign language. In order to guarantee you top quality, a wide variety of materials is used. The educational materials are made available to you free of charge for the duration of your course. All students receive a certificate of successful completion at the end of their courses.

TEACHERS

All of the teachers are native Spanish speakers and have extensive experience in teaching Spanish as a foreign language. Continuous training further guarantees the teachers‘ expertise and therefore optimal learning success. A wide range of modern teaching strategies is used, supported by multimedia elements. Central to all of the courses is a strong focus on applying the language in practice.

Teachers are friendly and helpful and motivate students to participate actively during classes.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

It is possible to combine your language course with volunteer work. This is a great opportunity to practise your Spanish, get to know the Mexican culture, and offer a helping hand to those in need. If you want to participate in a volunteer program, keep in mind that you need to take at least 4 weeks of Spanish and that you need to commit to minimum 2 weeks of volunteer work. Please check with us for possible volunteer projects.

The school arranges internships in Mexico year round for all fields of study. Take advantage of the school’s cooperation with numerous renowned Mexican and international businesses and organizations. You can begin an internship on every week of the year. The requirements for the placements, apart from a minimum commitment of eight (and in some cases twelve) weeks long, is that you should have a very good knowledge of the Spanish language. In case your Spanish is on a basic level, you should first start with a Spanish course.

An internship in Mexico gives you a unique opportunity to experience every day work life in a South American business. Here you will learn other ways of thinking and doing business which might prove to be invaluable for your further professional career.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation Suitable accommodation is a very important component for an effective Spanish Program. There are various options for accommodation in Playa del Carmen.

Host family
A very popular choice of accommodation among our students is living with a host family. Students who choose this option live in carefully selected host families which are situated within 5 to 20 minutes on foot from the language school and the beach. Host families offer furnished single and double rooms with breakfast or half board. Please note the double rooms are only for students traveling together. Prices are per person and not per room. If you are coming with a friend or partner, you are welcome to stay together in the same host family.

Shared Apartment
Many students live in our spacious shared apartments near the school. These comfortably furnished apartments each have two or more bedrooms, a living room with TV and an adjacent kitchen, and one or more bathrooms. The kitchen is fully equipped. The apartments are cleaned and the bedding is changed once per week, but we kindly ask that you bring your own towels.
All apartments are within walking distance (about 10-15 minutes) of the school. You can also get to the school by using public transport; this only takes about 5 minutes.
You may book a single room, a double room or even a room with several beds. In this case you know for sure you will share your room with other students; a great way to get to know your fellow companions.

Hotel
We can also arrange for you to stay in a hotel in Playa del Carmen. There is a range of hotels in different price categories. Most of the hotels are close to the beach and offer single or double rooms with the additional option of air-conditioning.

ACTIVITIES

Activities Every week, the school offers a comprehensive recreational program. You can learn more about Mexico and Playa Del Carmen during dance classes, city tours, lectures and fiestas. The activities take place at least two to three times a week, and form an important part of the philosophy: learn and ‘live’ the Spanish language!

The following activities are offered regularly (selection) and are included in the program:

  • City tour: On your first day at the school you will be taken on a city tour together with all the other new students. The purpose of this city tour is to familiarize yourself with everyday life in a new country. We will show you where to catch a bus, withdraw money, go shopping and use the Internet. We will of course also take this opportunity to show you some of the best sights in town, and show you where to find good restaurants, bars and ice cream parlors.
  • Dance classes: Discover Latin American rhythms such as Salsa and Merengue and immerse yourself in the South American temperament.
  • Discussion rounds and lectures. Inform yourself about historical and current Latin American topics. Learn more about your destination and its history and culture.
  • Fiesta with students, instructors, families, and friends. Enjoy a typical Mexican party with our school that includes native dishes, cocktails, and dancing.
  • Sports at the beach
  • Movie nights
  • Karaoke parties

PLAYA DEL CARMEN

Playa del Carmen Playa del Carmen is located in the center of Mexico's Riviera Maya in the state of Quintana Roo. In the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula, this small city is approximately 35 minutes from Cancun's international airport and 40 minutes from Tulum. Playa del Carmen attracts people from all over the world because of its relaxed, tropical atmosphere and its unmatched beautiful beaches. 10 years ago, it was still a small village know for fishing, but has developed into one of the most important tourist destinations in Caribbean. Beside its fast growth, Playa has kept his charming and typical Mexican atmosphere. Many small family-run hotels, international restaurants and endless beaches attract many visitors throughout the year. The second biggest coral reef of the world is nearby offering divers perfect dive conditions as well.
